Supplementary
information
C-peptide
(Connecting peptide) is a short peptide released during the production of
insulin in pancreatic β-cells. Insulin is initially synthesized as
preproinsulin, which is then processed into proinsulin in the endoplasmic
reticulum. During maturation in secretory granules, enzymes cleave proinsulin
to form active insulin (A chain + B chain) and the C-peptide, which connects
these two chains in the precursor molecule.
Clinically,
C-peptide measurement is commonly used to evaluate pancreatic β-cell function.
Low or absent C-peptide levels suggest impaired insulin production, as seen in
type 1 diabetes or advanced type 2 diabetes, while elevated levels may occur in
conditions with excessive insulin secretion, such as insulinoma or insulin
resistance.
