Supplementary
information
DJ-1
(also known as PARK7) is a multifunctional protein involved in cellular
protection against oxidative stress. It is expressed in many tissues, including
the brain, heart, and skeletal muscle, and plays an important role in
maintaining cell survival and mitochondrial function.
DJ-1
functions mainly as a sensor and regulator of oxidative stress. When cells are
exposed to reactive oxygen species (ROS), DJ-1 helps protect them by scavenging
oxidative molecules, regulating antioxidant responses, and stabilizing
mitochondrial activity. Through these actions, DJ-1 helps maintain cellular
redox balance and protects cells from damage.
DJ-1
is particularly important in neurons, where it contributes to protecting
dopaminergic neurons from oxidative injury. Mutations in the PARK7 gene, which
encodes DJ-1, have been linked to familial forms of Parkinson’s disease.
