4-Hydroxynonenal (4-HNE) is a reactive aldehyde produced during lipid peroxidation, a process that occurs when reactive oxygen species (ROS) damage cell membrane lipids. Because it forms when lipids are oxidized, 4-HNE is widely used as a biomarker of oxidative stress.

Elevated levels of 4-HNE are associated with oxidative stress–related diseases, including neurodegenerative disorders, cardiovascular disease, metabolic diseases, and cancer.
