information
VCAM-1
(Vascular Cell Adhesion Molecule-1) is a protein found on the surface of blood
vessel cells (endothelial cells). Its main role is to help immune cells attach
to blood vessels and move into tissues during inflammation.
Under
normal conditions, VCAM-1 levels are very low. When the body experiences
inflammation or infection, cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-1β stimulate
endothelial cells to produce more VCAM-1.
VCAM-1
acts like a “molecular hook” on the blood vessel wall. It binds to specific
proteins on immune cells, such as monocytes and lymphocytes, allowing these
cells to stick to the vessel wall and migrate into inflamed tissue.
Because
VCAM-1 increases during vascular inflammation, higher levels—especially soluble
VCAM-1 in blood—are often associated with diseases such as atherosclerosis,
cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. For this reason, VCAM-1 is commonly used
as a biomarker of endothelial activation and vascular inflammation.
