Supplementary
information
GLP-1
(Glucagon-Like Peptide-1) is a hormone that helps control blood sugar and
appetite after eating. It is released from intestinal L cells when food enters
the digestive system.
After
a meal, GLP-1 travels through the blood and acts on the pancreas, where it
stimulates insulin release and reduces glucagon secretion. These effects help
lower blood glucose levels, especially after eating. GLP-1 also acts on the
brain and stomach. In the brain, it reduces hunger and increases the feeling of
fullness. In the stomach, it slows down gastric emptying, meaning food leaves
the stomach more slowly, which helps control blood sugar and prolong satiety.
GLP-1
normally has a very short half-life because it is quickly broken down by the
enzyme DPP-4. Because GLP-1 can improve blood sugar control and reduce
appetite, drugs that mimic GLP-1 are widely used to treat type 2 diabetes and
obesity.
