Supplementary
information
Leptin
is a hormone that regulates energy balance, appetite, and body weight. It is
primarily produced by adipose (fat) tissue and acts as a signal to the brain to
indicate the body’s energy storage status.
Leptin
circulates in the bloodstream and binds to leptin receptors (LEPR) in the
hypothalamus, a brain region that controls hunger and metabolism. When body fat
increases, leptin levels rise and signal the brain to reduce appetite and
increase energy expenditure. Through this mechanism, leptin helps maintain
long-term body weight homeostasis by linking fat storage to appetite control.
In addition to regulating food intake, leptin also influences glucose
metabolism, immune function, and reproductive physiology.
