Supplementary
information
GIP
(Glucose-Dependent Insulinotropic Polypeptide) is an incretin hormone that
regulates glucose metabolism and insulin secretion. It is secreted by K cells
in the small intestine in response to food intake, particularly carbohydrates
and fats.
After
release, GIP binds to the GIP receptor (GIPR) on pancreatic β-cells, a
G-protein–coupled receptor, which increases cAMP signaling and stimulates
glucose-dependent insulin secretion.
Circulating
GIP levels are low during fasting and increase after meals. In type 2 diabetes,
the insulin-stimulating effect of GIP is often reduced despite normal or
elevated hormone levels.
